Shmuel Katz

Shmuel (Alexander) Katz, painter and Illustrator, was born in Vienna in 1926. He moved to Hungary and immigrated to Israel in 1946. He was then deported to Cyprus and in 1947 arrived in Israel. Studies: 1945 Architecture; 1953-54 Art Academy, Paris. Prizes: 1959 Art Book Exhibition, Leipzig; 1962 Grant from French Government; 1965 Salon for Humour, Italy; 1966 Oscar for Humour, Brussels; 1970 Humour in Art, Expo, Montreal; 1974 Nordau Prize; 1985 Nahum Gutman Prize; 1988 Anderson Prize, Basle. 1984 Designed stamps. Worked as children’s book designer. Lives on Kibbutz Gaaton
