In 1947, a Bedouin shepherd, tending sheep in the hills near the Dead Sea, discovered several caves containing a number of pottery jars dating to the First Century CE. Made by the Essenes from the settlement of Qumran, these Jars were made to perform various duties, as needed, including the storage of scrolls, the accumulating and transporting of tithes of produce, and the storage of foods and other valuables.
